Lesson 308 A famous monastery
The Great St Bernard Pass [1]connects Switzerland to Italy. At 2470 [2]metres, it is the highest mountain pass in Europe. The famous monastery of St Bernard, which was founded in the eleventh century, lies about a mile away. For hundreds of years, St Bernard dogs have saved the [3]lives of [4]travellers crossing the dangerous Pass. These friendly dogs, which were first brought from Asia, were used as watchdogs even in Roman times. Now that a tunnel has been built through the mountains, the Pass is less dangerous; but each year, the dogs are still sent out into the snow whenever a traveller is in difficulty. Despite the new tunnel, there are still a few people who rashly attempt to cross the Pass on foot.
During the summer months, the monastery is very busy, for it is visited by thousands of people who cross the Pass in cars. As there are so many people about, the dogs have to be kept in a special enclosure. In winter, however, life at the monastery is quite different. The temperature drops to -30° and very few people attempt to cross the Pass. The monks [5]prefer winter to summer for they have more privacy. The dogs have greater freedom, too, for they are allowed to wander outside their enclosure. The only regular visitors to the monastery in winter are parties of skiers who go there at Christmas and Easter. These young people, who love the peace of the mountains, always receive a warm welcome at St Bernard's monastery.

The expensive shops in a famous arcade near Piccadilly were just opening. At this time of the morning, the arcade was almost empty. Mr. Taylor, the owner of a jewellery shop was admiring a new window display. Two of his assistants had been working busily since 8 o'clock and had only just finished. Diamond necklaces and rings had been beautifully arranged on a background of black velvet. After gazing at the display for several minutes, Mr. Taylor went back into his shop.
The silence was suddenly broken when a large car, [1]with its headlights on and its horn [2]blaring, roared down the arcade. It [3]came to a stop outside the jeweler's. One man stayed at the wheel while two others 1with black stockings over their faces jumped out and smashed the window of the shop with iron bars. While this was going on, Mr. Taylor was upstairs. He and his staff [4]began throwing furniture [5]out of the window. Chairs and tables [6]went flying into the arcade. One of the [7]thieves was [8]struck by a heavy statue, but he was too [9]busy [10]helping himself to diamonds to notice any pain. The raid was all over in three minutes, for the men scrambled back into the car and it moved off at a fantastic speed. Just as it was leaving, Mr. Taylor rushed out and ran after it throwing ashtrays and vases, but it was impossible to stop the thieves. They had got away with thousands of pounds [11]worth of diamonds.

Editors of newspapers and magazines often [1]go to extremes to [2]provide their readers with unimportant facts and statistics. Last year a journalist had been instructed by a well-known magazine to write an article on the president's palace in a new African republic. When the article arrived, the editor read the first sentence and then refused to publish it. The article began: 'Hundreds of steps lead to the high wall which surrounds the president's palace.' The editor at once [3]sent the journalist a fax instructing him to find out the exact number of steps and the height of the wall.
The journalist immediately set out to obtain these important facts, but he took a long time to send them. Meanwhile, the editor was [4]getting impatient, for the magazine would soon go to press. He sent the journalist [5]two more faxes, but received no reply. He sent yet another fax informing the journalist that if he did not reply soon he would be fired. When the journalist again failed to reply, the editor reluctantly published the article as it had originally been written. A week later, the editor at last received a fax from the journalist. [6]Not only had the poor man been arrested, but he had been sent to prison as well. However, he had at last been [7]allowed to send a fax in which he informed the editor that he had been arrested while counting the 1084 steps leading to the 15-foot wall which surrounded the president's palace.

Lesson304 The double life of Alfred Bloggs
These days, people who do manual work often receive far more money than clerks who work in offices. People who work in offices are frequently [1]referred to as 'white collar workers' [2]for the simple reason that they usually wear a collar and tie to go to work. [3]Such is human nature, that a great many people are often willing to [4]sacrifice higher pay for the privilege of becoming white collar workers. This can give rise to curious situations, as it did in the case of Alfred Bloggs who worked as a dustman for the Ellesmere Corporation.
When he got married, Alf was too embarrassed to say anything to his wife about his job. He simply told her that he worked for the Corporation. Every morning, he left home dressed in a smart black suit. He then changed into overalls and spent the next eight hours as a dustman. Before returning home at night, he took a shower and changed back into his suit. Alf did this for over two years and his fellow dustmen kept his secret. Alf's wife has never discovered that she married a dustman and [5]she never will, for Alf has just found another job. He will soon be working in an office as a junior clerk. He will be earning only [6]half as much as he [7]used to, but he feels that his rise in status [8]is well worth the loss of money. From now on, he will wear a suit all day and others will [9]call him 'Mr. Bloggs', not 'Alf'.

Lesson 303 An unknown goddess
Some time ago，an interesting discovery was made by archaeologists on the Aegean island of Kea．An American team explored a temple which stands in an ancient city on the promontory of Ayia Irini．The city at one time must have been prosperous，for it enjoyed a high level of civilization．Houses--often three [1]storeys high--were built of stone．They had large rooms with beautifully decorated walls．The city was even [2]equipped with a drainage system，for a great many clay pipes were found beneath the narrow streets．
The temple which the archaeologists explored was used as a place of worship from the fifteenth century [3]B.C. until Roman times. In the most sacred room of the temple, clay fragments of fifteen statues were found. Each of these represented a goddess and had, at one time, been painted. The body of one statue was found among remains [4]dating from the fifteenth century B.C. Its missing head happened to be among remains of the fifth century B.C. This head must have been found in Classical times and carefully preserved. It was very old and precious even then. When the archaeologists reconstructed the fragments, they were amazed to find that the goddess turned out to be a very modern-[5]looking woman. She stood three feet high and her hands rested on her hips. She was wearing a full-length skirt which swept the ground. Despite her great age, she was very graceful indeed, but, so far, the archaeologists have been unable to discover her identity.

Lesson 302 Thirteen equals one
Our vicar is always raising money for one cause or another, but he has never managed to get enough money to [1]have the church clock repaired. The big clock which [2]used to strike the hours day and night was damaged many years ago and has been silent ever since.
One night, however, our vicar woke up with a start: the clock was striking the hours! Looking at his watch, he saw that it was one o'clock, but the bell [3]struck thirteen times before it stopped. [4]Armed with a torch, the vicar went up into the clock tower to see what was going on. In the torchlight, he caught sight of a figure whom he immediately [5]recognized as Bill Wilkins, our local grocer. 'Whatever are you doing up here, Bill?' asked the vicar in surprise.
' I'm trying to repair the bell,' answered Bill.' I've been coming up here night after night for weeks now. You see, I was hoping to give you a surprise.'
'You certainly [6]did give me a surprise!' said the vicar. 'You've probably woken up everyone in the village as well. Still, I'm glad the bell is working again.'
'That's the trouble, vicar,' answered Bill. 'It's working all right, but I'm afraid that at one o'clock it will strike thirteen times and there's nothing I can do about it.'
'We'll [7]get used to that, Bill,' said the vicar. 'Thirteen is not as good as one but it's better than nothing. Now [8]let's go downstairs and have a cup of tea.'

Lesson 301 A puma at large
Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. When reports came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles south of London, they were not [1]taken seriously. However, as the evidence began to accumulate, experts from the Zoo felt obliged to investigate, for the descriptions given by people who claimed to have seen the puma were extraordinarily similar.
The hunt for the puma began in a small village where a woman picking blackberries saw 'a large cat' only five yards away from her. It immediately ran away when she saw it, and experts confirmed that a puma will not attack a human being unless it is cornered. The search [2]proved difficult, for the puma was often observed at one place in the morning and at another place twenty miles away in the evening. Wherever it went, it [3]left behind it a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits. Paw prints were seen in a number of places and puma fur was [4]found [5]clinging to bushes. Several people [6]complained of 'cat-like noises' at night and a businessman on a fishing trip saw the puma up a tree. The experts were now fully convinced that the animal was a puma, but where had it come from ? As no pumas had been [7]reported missing from any zoo in the country, this one must have been in the possession of a private collector and somehow managed to escape. The hunt went on for several weeks, but the puma was not caught. It is disturbing to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in the quiet countryside.

A giant lives in a big house with a nice garden. Children like to play in the giant's garden. They go there every afternoon.
The garden is lovely. There are nice, beautiful flowers in the garden. The flowers look like stars. There are peach trees in the garden, too. Their blossoms smell very sweet.
The children are happy in the garden. They can climb the trees. They can listen to the birds sing. They run around and laugh.
One day, the giant comes home. He went away seven years ago. He went to see his friend. The giant sees the children in his garden, so he is very angry.
"Why are you here?" he asks them. "This is my garden!"
The children are frightened. They run away. The giant makes a big sign. It says, "Do Not Enter." He puts it on the gate outside his house. He is very selfish.
Now the children have no place to play. The road is too dusty. The woods are too dark. The fields are too windy. They are not happy now.
Soon, winter arrives. He makes the weather very cold. Everything is gray and quiet. Then, spring comes again. Everyone is happy to see her return. Fields become green. Flowers grow under every window. Birds fly around singing.
In the giant's garden, the weather is still cold. Spring doesn't want to go there because the giant is too selfish. There are no birds there. A flower comes up from the ground. It sees the "Do Not Enter" sign on the gate.
"The giant is very selfish," it thinks. "I will go back to sleep."
The snow and the frost are happy. They don't like spring. They want to live in the giant's garden all year.
"Spring has forgotten this garden," they cry. "We can stay here forever."
The snow puts a white blanket on the ground. He doesn't want to see any flowers growing there. The frost paints all of the trees silver. She doesn't want any blossoms on the trees.
The snow and the frost invite the North Wind. He comes into the garden. He is wearing a fur coat and hat. He blows all day in the giant's garden.
"This is fun," roars the North Wind. "I'm so happy. I don't need to go to sleep this year!"
The snow, the frost, and the North Wind invite the hail. For three hours, the hail rattles on the roof. He breaks some of the giant's windows. Then, he runs around and around in the garden. He likes being noisy.
The giant is sitting at a window. He is looking at his cold, white garden. He feels confused.
"Why is spring coming so late?" he thinks. "I hope the weather changes soon."
But spring never comes. Summer never arrives, either. Fall stays away, too. They don't want to share their sweet fruit, warm weather and happy feelings with the selfish giant.
One morning, the giant is lying in bed. He suddenly hears something. It sounds like a bird singing.
"That is strange," he thinks. "I don't hear the wind blowing or the hail falling outside."
The giant looks out his window. He sees some children sitting in the trees. The trees have blossoms growing on them. There are birds flying around and singing. Flowers and green grass cover the ground.
In one corner, spring hasn't returned. A little boy is crying under a frozen tree there. He wants to climb the tree, but he is too short. The North Wind is blowing around him.
"Climb up," says the tree to the boy.
"I can't," cries the little boy. "I'm too short."
The giant feels very sad for the boy.
"Spring has not come to my garden. Now, I know why," he thinks. "I have been very selfish. I will put the poor little boy in the tree."
Now the giant wants the children to play in his garden every day. He wants them to climb up into the trees. He wants them to run around and laugh. He wants them to be happy.
The giant opens his door and goes out into the garden. When the children see the giant, they are scared and run away. They are not in the garden now. The snow, frost, and hail return.
The little boy is still crying. The giant walks to the little boy. He picks him up, and puts him in the tree. Tree blossoms come out at once. Birds fly to the tree and begin singing.
The little boy is very happy. He hugs the giant. The other children are watching. They are surprised. The giant has changed. They come back inside the garden.
The giant talks to the children.
"The garden is yours now," he tells them. "I will knock down the wall, so you can come here every day to play."
The giant knocks down the wall. People are surprised to see the children playing in the garden. The children play there all day. The next day they come back, but the little boy is not with them. The giant feels sad.
"Where is your little friend?" asks the giant. "Please ask him to come with you next time."
The little children return to the garden every afternoon, but the little boy is never with them. The giant really wants to see his little friend. He misses him.
Many years pass by. The giant gets old and weak. He can't play with children now. He sits in his big chair and watches the children play.
The giant is happy because the children make him happy. "My garden has many pretty things in it," he thinks. "But the most beautiful flowers are the children."
Winter comes again. The giant looks out his window. He sees the little boy standing under a tree. The tree has many blossoms on it.
The giant is very excited. He runs downstairs and into the garden. He runs to his little friend and hugs him.
The little boy speaks to the giant.
"You are a good giant," he says. "Before, you helped me climb into the tree. Now you can come with me. We will live together in paradise forever."
That afternoon, the children come to the garden. They find the giant. He is lying on the ground. Many white blossoms are on top of him. He is dead. There is a smile on his face.

有一天，巨人回來了。七年前他離家去看他朋友。這個巨人看到他的花園有小朋友時非常生氣。
“你們怎麼來這裡？”他向他們問道。“這是我的花園！”
小朋友們都嚇壞了，他們趕緊跑開。於是巨人就做了一個大牌子，上面寫著“禁止進入”。他把這個牌子立在住家外面的大門上。這個巨人很自私。
現在小朋友們沒有地方可以玩了。馬路有很多灰塵，森林裡太暗，原野上風又太大。他們現在都快樂不起來了。
冬天很快就來了。冬天把天氣變得非常寒冷。所有東西都變成了灰色，一片死寂。接著，春天又到了。大家都很高興春回大地。原野又綠了起來，每扇窗戶下面的花兒也都長了出來。小鳥飛來飛去哼著歌兒。
可是在巨人的花園裡，天氣還是很寒冷。春天不想光臨，因為巨人太自私了。那兒一隻鳥也看不見。有一朵小花鑽出泥土便看到立在門口那個“禁止進入”的牌子。
小花心想：“這個巨人太自私了。我要回去睡覺。”
白雪和寒霜最高興了。他們都討厭春天。他們希望一整年都待在巨人的花園裡。
他們大叫著說：“春天已經忘了這個花園。我們可以永遠待在這個地方了。”
白雪在地上鋪了一張白色的毯子。他不想看到花朵生長出來。寒霜把所有的樹木都漆成銀白色。她也不希望這些樹開出花來。
白雪、寒霜邀請北風來作客，他便來到這座花園。北風穿著一件毛皮外套並戴著一頂帽子，他整天在巨人的花園中刮著寒風。
北風吼叫著說：“真好玩。我太高興了，今年我不必睡覺了！”
白雪、寒霜和北風又邀請了冰雹來玩。一連三個小時，冰雹在屋頂上嘩啦嘩啦地下著。他把巨人的幾扇窗戶都打破了，然後在花園中跑來跑去。他就是愛吵鬧。
巨人坐在窗邊，一直看著他這座既冷清又一片白茫茫的花園。他覺得很困惑。
“為什麼春天來得那麼晚呢？”他心想。“真希望天氣趕快好轉。”
可是春天還是沒來。夏天也不來報到。秋天更是離得遠遠的。他們都不願意把他們香甜的水果、溫暖的天氣與快樂的情緒和這個自私的巨人分享。
有一天早上，巨人還躺在床上。他忽然聽到一陣聲音，好像是小鳥在唱歌的聲音。
“真奇怪，”他心想。“怎麼聽不到外頭北風怒吼或冰雹降落的聲音了？”
巨人朝著窗外看出去。他看到幾個小朋友坐在樹上。這些樹都已經開出花來。小鳥飛來飛去哼著歌兒。地上鋪滿了芬芳的花朵和綠草。
在花園某個角落裡，春天還是沒到。有一個小男孩正在一棵結凍的樹下哭泣。他想爬到樹上，但是他太矮了。北風正在他四周吹著呢。
樹朝著這個男孩說：“爬上來啊。”
小男孩哭著說：“我太矮了，爬不上去。”
巨人為這個男孩感到難過。
“春天到現在都還沒來到我的花園。現在我明白原因了，”他心想。“我太自私了。我來把這個可憐的小男孩抱到樹上好了。”
現在巨人希望小朋友們天天來他的花園玩耍。他希望他們爬樹，希望他們跑來跑去，開懷大笑。他希望他們開開心心。
巨人打開房門走進了花園。小朋友看到巨人時，全都嚇壞了，便趕緊跑掉。現在，他們都離開了花園。白雪、寒霜和冰雹又回來了。
那個小男孩還在哭泣，巨人便走向那小男孩，把他抱起來放到樹上。這時樹上的花兒立刻開了。小鳥也飛到這棵樹上唱起歌來。
小男孩好高興喔。他擁抱著巨人。其他的小朋友都在看。他們覺得很驚訝。巨人跟以前不一樣了，於是他們都回到花園裡來。
巨人跟小朋友們說話。
“從今以後這座花園是你們的了，”他向他們說。“我要把圍牆拆掉，這樣你們天天都可以來這裡玩。”
巨人把圍牆拆掉。大家看到小朋友們在花園中玩耍都感到很驚奇。小朋友們在那裡玩了一整天。隔天他們又回來，可是那個小男孩卻沒來。巨人覺得很難過。
“你們那位小朋友到哪去了？”巨人問道。“下次要請他一起來喔。”
小朋友們每天下午都會回到這座花園來玩，可是那個小男孩一直沒有出現。巨人真的很想再見見這個小朋友。他很想念他。
很多年過去了。巨人年紀大了，身體也差多了。他現在無法跟小朋友們一起遊戲了。他坐在他那一張大椅子上看著小朋友玩耍。
巨人現在很快樂，因為小朋友們讓他非常開心。他心想：“我的花園裡有很多很多漂亮的東西，但是最美麗的花朵卻是這些小朋友。”
冬天又來了。巨人朝著窗外望去，看到了那個小男孩站在一棵樹底下。那棵樹上開了很多花。
巨人感到非常興奮。他跑下樓去，進入了花園。他跑過去擁抱那個小朋友。
小男孩跟巨人說話了。
“你是一個好巨人，”他說。“以前你曾經幫助我爬到樹上。現在你可以跟我來了，我們將永遠一起住在幸福的天國。”
當天下午，小朋友們來到了花園。他們發現巨人躺在地上。在他的身上蓋著很多白色的花朵。他死了，臉上卻掛著笑容。
There are three little pigs. They live in a small house with their mother. "This house is too small. The three of you must leave home. You must build your own homes," says the mother pig one day.
The first little pig gets some hay. "I will build a house of hay," he says. "It will not be hard. My house will be easy to make. Then, I will go play."
"I will use sticks to make a house," says the second little pig. "It will be easy. Then, I will go play with my brother." The second little pig quickly builds his home. He goes outside to play.
" I will build my houseof bricks. It will take a long time," says the third little pig. He builds his house. It is hard work, but the house is strong.
One day, the three little pigs see some footprints. They are the big bad wolf's footprints. The little pigs run to their homes. They are afraid of the big bad wolf. He eats little pigs.
The big bad wolf goes to the first little pig's house. The house is made of hay. "Little pig, little pig, let me come in!" says the wolf.
"No way! I will not let you in," says the little pig.
"If you don't let me in, I will blow your house down!" says the wolf. The wolf blows hard. The house falls down. The first little pig runs away. He runs to the second little pig's house.
The second little pig's house is made of sticks. The first little pig and the second little pig are in the house. They are both very afraid.
"Little pigs, little pigs, let me come in!" says the wolf.
"No way! We will not let you in," say the two little pigs.
"If you don't let me in, I will blow your house down!" says the wolf. The wolf blows down the second little pig's house. The stick house is easy to blow down. The two little pigs run to the third little pig's house.
The wolf goes to the third little pig's house. The house is strong. It is made of bricks. "Little pigs, little pigs, let me come in!" says the wolf."No way! We will not let you in," say the three little pigs.
"If you don't let me in, I will blow your house down!" says the wolf. The wolf is hungry. He wants to eat all of the three little pigs. He blows and blows and blows and blows, but the house cannot be blown down.
The wolf is angry. "I will get all of you," says the wolf. He climbs on top of the house. He goes down the chimney. The third little pig makes a fire.
"Owwwwwwwwww!" cries the wolf. The fire burns the wolf, and he runs away. The three little pigs never see him again.
The next day, the third little pig helps his brothers. He helps them build houses. They all build houses of brick. It takes a long time, but no one can ever blow their houses down.
The wolf runs far away. He doesn't eat little pigs anymore. It is too dangerous.

“我的屋子要用磚頭來蓋。這要花上很長的時間，”第三隻小豬說。他便蓋起屋子，這工作不輕鬆，不過屋子卻挺牢固的。
有一天，三隻小豬看到幾個腳印，這是大野狼的腳印。三隻小豬趕緊跑回各自的家裡。他們很怕大野狼，因為他會吃小豬。
大野狼走到第一隻小豬的家門口。這間屋子是乾草蓋的。”小豬，小豬，讓我進來！”大野狼說。”
“不行！我不會讓你進來，”小豬說道。
“你若不讓我進來，我就要把你的屋子吹倒！”大野狼說。於是他猛力一吹屋子就倒了，第一隻小豬便連忙逃走。他跑到第二隻小豬的家裡。
第二隻小豬的屋子是樹枝蓋的。第一隻小豬和第二隻小豬都待在屋內，他們都很害怕。
“小豬，小豬，讓我進來！”大野狼說。
“不行！我們不會讓你進來！”兩隻小豬說道。
“你們如果不讓我進來，我就要把你們的屋子吹倒！”大野狼說。於是他就把第二隻小豬的家吹倒了。這間樹枝造的房子很容易就被吹倒。兩隻小豬便跑到第三隻小豬的家裡去。
大野狼來到第三隻小豬的家門口。這間屋子很堅固，它是用磚蓋的。”小豬，小豬，讓我進來！”大野狼說。”不行！我們不會讓你進來，”三隻小豬說。
“你們若不讓我進來，我就把你們的屋子吹倒！”大野狼說。他肚子餓了，想要把這三隻小豬全都吃掉。他吹了又吹，可是這間屋子就是吹不倒。
大野狼很生氣。”我要把你們全部抓起來，”大野狼說。他爬上屋頂，再從煙囪爬下來。第三隻小豬生起火來。
“哎喲！”大野狼大叫一聲。火燒到大野狼，他便逃走了。三隻小豬再也沒看到他了。
第二天，第三隻小豬就來幫他兩個哥哥。他幫他們蓋屋子，他們蓋的是磚房。這很花時間，但誰也無法吹倒他們的屋子了。
大野狼跑掉了。他再也不吃小豬了。吃小豬太危險了。
